Francisco Salzillo

Francisco Salzillo Alcaraz nació en Murcia el 12 de mayo de 1707. Hijo de Isabel Alcaraz y Nicolás Salzillo, que fue un escultor italiano afincado en Murcia procedente de la ciudad italiana de Capua. Francisco Salziillo cursó sus estudios entre diversas órdenes religiosas establecidas en la ciudad. Además de aquella educación que recibió de Jesuitas y Dominicos, fue creciendo entre las herramientas del taller de su padre. Sus primeros conocimientos de pintura los recibió de parte del religioso Manuel Cuenca. Muy joven, tiene que hacerse cargo del taller escultórico de su padre a la muerte de éste en 1727, cuando Francisco contaba con tan sólo veinte años.

Murcia me gusta. Ciudad clara de colores calientes, de piedras tostadas, color de cacahuete tostado. Y notas deliciosas de luz, las calles estrechas y sin aceras, las “veredicas del cielo”, las tiendas de los artesanos, el esparto y la cuerda. Y ahora en el crepúsculo, una luz maravillosa.
